SOLD: Violin by Giulio Degani,
Venice
, 1902. Degani was 27 years of age when this violin was made, and is
the earliest example I have seen which is a departure from his father
Eugenio’s model. The body length
of 35.7 cm is considerably reduced from the 36.7+ cm length his father often
used. The edges, while still deeply
fluted, are somewhat softer without the over-sharp line at the top of the edge
favored by Eugeno. Likewise with the
scroll, which is still deeply cut, but with more rounded chamfers.
Very striking, highly flamed two piece back, sides and scroll, with a
tight, even grained spruce top. This
instrument is covered with the maker’s best quality oil varnish- deep reddish
orange-brown in color over a golden base. Condition
is excellent; the tone is powerful and rich in overtones.

transparent varnish. This violin is
