Violin by Hippolyte Chrétien Silvestre, Lyon, 1876. This is a beautiful example of this makers work prior to his move to Paris in 1885. Highly-flamed back, sides and scroll, unusually fine-grained (for this maker) spruce, highly transparent light orange brown varnish over a gold base. Excellent condition, powerful yet refined and colorful tone. SOLD: Violin by Giulio Degani, Venice, 1902. Degani was 27 years of age when this violin was made, and is the earliest example I have seen that is a departure from his father Eugenio’s model. The body length of 35.7 cm is considerably reduced from the 36.7+ cm length his father often used. The edges, while still deeply fluted, are somewhat softer without the over-sharp line at the top of the edge favored by Eugeno. Likewise with the scroll, which is still deeply cut, but with more rounded chamfers. Very striking, highly-flamed two piece back, sides and scroll, with a tight, even grained spruce top. This instrument is covered with the maker’s best quality oil varnish: deep reddish orange-brown in color over a golden base. Condition is excellent; the tone is powerful and rich in overtones. CM# 20848

SOLD: Violin by Sebastien Vuillaume, CA 1860. Sebastien was the nephew of JB Vuillaume and worked in his Uncle’s shop for several years beginning in 1853. This example shows the influence of those years with his uncle, from the stunning, highly figured wood of the one-piece back to the beautifully antiqued and highly transparent varnish. This violin is in a remarkable state of preservation and will give its new owner many years of trouble-free enjoyment. SOLD: Violin by J.B Vuillaume, Paris, 1864. Modeled after Maggini, this instrument is in mint condition with nearly 100 percent of its original varnish.
